The Queen's First Pick: Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan is next up on the list. It's kind of a tough one to watch but definitely worth it. And once again it features our main man Tom Hanks. Maybe our club should just be called "The Tom Hanks Society"? Thoughts??

We were all shocked by the amount of actors that we knew in the movie. Most shockingly... VIN DIESEL!! Who knew? Also Paul Giamatti. Quite an eclectic cast.

One of our favourite fun facts was that all the actors went through a week of grueling army training with the exception of Matt Damon. Apparently Spielberg did this intentionally so that the other actors would resent Damon- something that he wanted to come through in the film.

Also interesting: 40 barrels of fake blood were used in the opening scene alone. That should give you a clue as to why we found it hard to watch.

Line of the movie: "Earn this".

Erin's Pick: The Green Mile

Continuing with the Tom Hanks theme we decided to watch The Green Mile. Normally we all have a pretty similar opinion of the movies we watch but this one threw us off a bit. I wasn't a huge fan. It seemed like it had a lot of potential but I didn't think the story came together at the end. It also could have had to do with the fact that my rodent-phobia was provoked to the max by this session of film club.... didn't exactly set the stage for an enjoyable movie experience. First of all, this character was featured in almost every scene of the movie:

And second of all, a REAL LIVE mouse decided to run through the living room half way through the movie. And it's just not as comfortable to watch 2 hours of a movie standing on the arm of a sofa... call me crazy.

But enough of my complaining. Here are our ratings:

Line of the movie: "Sometimes the Green Mile can be a long one."

Sanjay's Pick: Toy Story 3

Ok, we will admit it... Toy Story 3 may not be "high quality cinema" according to most people's definitions. But it made the film club cut because the original was a classic in all of our childhoods, and we wanted to see how the third one stacked up. (And hey, it also got an Oscar nom!)

Picture from [here]

This Toy Story had all the touching moments and adult-friendly jokes as the previous two. The biggest difference here is that Andy is heading off to college..... which definitely made it more relevant for us.

Our favourite line of the movie isn't the MOST original, but it couldn't exactly be anything else: "You've got a friend in me."

Elle's First Pick: Shawshank Redemption

I will be honest and admit that I thought Shawshank Redemption was a horror film. Don't know why? All I can do is thank my lucky stars that I have Film Club to straighten out my skewed movie perceptions.

Picture from [here]
We like to look up trivia while we watch the movies (and by we, I mean Julie), and our favourite trivia that we found for Shawshank was that the role of Andy was originally offered to Tom Hanks. He turned it down because he was filming Forrest Gump, and the role went to Tim Robbins. Hanks did, however, accept a role in another Stephen King movie- The Green Mile. (More on that movie to come!)

Quote of the movie: "The funny thing is, on the outside I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook."

Martha's Pick: The Royal Tenenbaum's

Picture from [here]

This was a natural for my first pick since The Royal Tenenbaum's is one of my favourite movies. My favourite movies are about eccentric people and the Tenenbaum's are about as eccentric as they come.

Inaugural Meeting: Dead Poets Society

[Picture from here]

This is the movie where it all began. Julie and I (Martha) watched a clip of Dead Poets Society in our organizational behaviour class and wanted to watch the whole thing. We realized that we had heard Robin Williams' famous line "Oh captain, my captain!" before but never knew where it came from. This spawned the idea for film club and the rest is history....

So without further ado, here are our ratings:

Line of the movie: "Oh captain, my captain."
